IndyStar hires Zion Brown as motorsports reporter. Here's how to follow

IndyStar has a legacy of covering motorsports beyond its award-winning coverage of the Indy 500. Meet the newest motorsports reporter, a native of Indy.

IndyStar is pleased to announce that Zion Brown has been hired as its motorsports reporter.

It's a return to the Star for Brown, who helped with coverage of the Indy 500 and Brickyard 400 in 2024 as part of an internship and part-time role.

He's already hit the ground running to build relationships around the paddock for IndyStar's dedicated coverage of motorsports. He's had several bylines and, with the start of content days this week, will have plenty to come as the season ramps up.

"I'm thrilled to be IndyStar's new motorsports reporter," Brown said. "As someone who grew up on the west side of Indianapolis, I've always paid attention to IndyCar. It has been great to rejoin the newsroom that I interned at for a little over a year while I was studying at Indiana University. I look forward to working with so many talented writers, editors, photographers and videographers again.

"I hope to best serve Central Indiana's racing fans by telling the most intriguing and informative stories. I also wish to have a notable presence in the podcast and video space. I can't wait for the start of the IndyCar season on March 1, and, of course, for May."

Brown graduated from Ben Davis High School, where he began his journalism journey with an emphasis on video. His versatile skill set will allow him and IndyStar to share motorsports stories across multiple platforms, connecting with audiences of all sorts.

"Zion's storytelling is impressive, and the ways in which he can connect with various audiences made him a great fit to lead IndyStar's motorsports coverage going forward," assistant sports editor Aaron Ferguson said. "His ideas and vision for what makes a great story is going to serve him and our audience well. I look forward to helping Zion grow as a storyteller and craft the best experience for racing fans — whether diehards, casuals or those who focus on marquee events like our award-winning Indy 500 coverage."

IndyStar's coverage of the 500 has placed in the top 10 of the Associated Press Sports Editors event category all four years it has been awarded. Brown joins a sports department that has won 88 APSE awards since 2016, second only to the Washington Post.

He is the latest in a legacy list of motorsports reporters at the Star, following Nathan Brown (no relation), Jim Ayello and Curt Cavin.
