New No. 1 in this week's Kentucky high school boys basketball rankings

There's a new No. 1 in Kentucky high school boys basketball. The St. Xavier Tigers and Male Bulldogs both fell in our latest KHSAA basketball rankings

Madison Central is the new No. 1 team in the Kentucky High School Boys Basketball Elite 16 media poll.

The Indians are 20-1 and have won 13 in a row since suffering their lone loss — 70-59 to St. Xavier on Dec. 21 in the semifinals of the King of the Bluegrass Holiday Classic at Fairdale.

Madison Central received eight of the 16 first-place votes and was followed in the top five by St. X (five first-place votes), Covington Catholic (three first-place votes), Daviess County and Male.

St. X dropped from the No. 1 spot after a 72-69 loss to North Oldham on Jan. 20.

The Kentucky High School Boys Basketball Elite 16 is conducted by 16 sports journalists — one from each of the state’s 16 basketball regions. The poll will be released online each Tuesday throughout the regular season.

Along with the statewide top 16, voters will provide top-five rankings for their respective regions.
