Bad news for the Deacs
Wake Forest starting point guard Nate Calmese suffered a grade 3 ankle sprain in Saturday’s game against Pitt, per Steve Forbes.
According to Harvard Medical School, a grade 3 sprain constitutes as: “Full tear or rupture. Severe pain, swelling, tenderness, and bruising. Considerable instability, loss of function and range of motion. Unable to bear weight or walk.” The recovery time is listed as “several months,” so while Calmese is out “indefinitely,” this is likely to be a season ending injury.
Before the injury, Calmese was having a stellar senior campaign for Wake Forest. The Washington State transfer was averaging 10.4 points, 4.9 assists and 1.4 steals per game for the Deacs and was shooting a career high 39% from beyond the arc. With crucial late game baskets in both of Wake’s ACC wins against Virginia Tech and Florida State, Calmese was clearly Wake’s go-to guy in the clutch—that was made very apparent with his absence in Saturday’s loss against Pitt.
The Deacs will need Denver transfer Sebastian Akins, who is averaging 4.8 points and 1.8 assists per game this year, to step up and fill the void left by Calmese.
Injuries suck.
Go Deacs.
