On a night where the Carolina Hurricanes honored their history; they made history.
They don’t call them the ‘Cardiac Canes’ for nothing. Facing a two-goal deficit with two minutes left in the game, it didn’t look like the winning-streak magic of the Hartford Whalers still remained since the Colorado Avalanche sucked away their win the last time they donned the ‘Gumby Green’ duds in early January.
Or so that was what many were led to believe. Somehow…somehow, the Hurricanes (33-15-5) overcame the Utah Mammoth (28-22-4) in regulation Thursday, as they scored three goals in one minute and 29 seconds to take the 5-4 win. It was the first time such a feat had been accomplished since 1995, and only the third time in NHL history.
Special teams were what decided the game, as three of five of the Hurricanes’ goals came with the man-advantage (power play, empty net).
Throughout a choppy 60 minutes, the one who lit the spark was Andrei Svechnikov, who scored the first goal of the game and brought the Hurricanes back into it with the first of the three late goals. Additionally, Shayne Gostisbehere also helped carry the team to victory, scoring directly after both of Svechnikov’s goals. Both players finished the night with three points (2G, 1A).
The final goal of the game came with just 30 seconds left as Jordan Staal tipped-in a shot with a pair of helpers from Jordan Martinook and Jalen Chatfield.
HOLY COW! JORDAN STAAL!

Hurricanes Notes
The Hurricanes are 8-1-3 when wearing their Hartford Whalers throwback kits.
Shayne Gostisbehere played his first game since January 13th, and notched his fourth three-point games of the season.
With the win, Brandon Bussi reached his 20th win this season. With just 24 games played, he became the fastest goaltender to 20 wins in an NHL career.
Joel Nystrom and Noah Philp were both assigned to the Chicago Wolves Thursday afternoon.
