The Los Angeles Rams waived second-year kicker Joshua Karty and replaced him with Harrison Mevis back in November. The Rams signed Karty to the practice squad a few days later but then the Arizona Cardinals signed him off the practice squad in December.

Karty is now the second kicker on the Cardinals’ roster alongside third-year kicker Chad Ryland.

Karty spent the first two seasons of his NFL career with the Rams after the franchise drafted him with the No. 209 pick in 2024. He played in 25 games and made 39 of his 49 field goal attempts with Los Angeles.

On Thursday, Karty expressed his gratitude for his experience on the Rams and his appreciation for the Rams fanbase on Instagram.

“Belated thank you to everyone who embraced me in LA the last couple years. I’ll cherish these memories forever!” Karty wrote.

The Rams initially intended to keep both Karty and Mevis on the roster. Karty had missed some crucial kicks during the season, which resulted in the Rams seeking out another kicking option. Mevis has made 12 of his 13 kick attempts since signing with Los Angeles.

Rams coach Sean McVay told reporters the decision to waive Karty ultimately came down to roster management. There was not enough space to keep both kickers on the roster and fill other positions that had been hit with injuries.

McVay said he believes Karty has a bright future in the NFL ahead of him.

“Josh has done a great job. I think there’s been a lot of growth that’s gone on that hasn’t been seen by you guys or others, in terms of the way he’s gone about his weekly rhythm. What a good job he’s done of making a couple little tweaks, and the way he’s handled it says as much as anything about who he is. And I think his future is going to be really bright,” McVay said in November.

What’s Next for Karty?

Karty was in the second year of his four-year, $4.15 million rookie contract before the Rams waived him in November. He signed a one-year, $960,000 deal with the Cardinals in December.

Karty, who will turn 34 on March 7, will become an exclusive rights free agent in March. Therefore, if the Cardinals tender him a one-year contract at the league minimum, he must sign and play with Arizona in 2026.

Then, he will compete with Ryland for the starting kicker role in training camp.
