Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany spent some of his formative years as a player at Hamburger SV and on Saturday he will return to Volksparkstadion as the manager of the league leaders.

It will be a fun and meaningful moment for the Belgian.

“It’s still a special thing for me, also Hamburg the city. Living there was special and still is. But I also know HSV are going through a rebuild. When things are stable and calm, I know from my time there that there’s potential. When things are healthy, stable and good, they’re a team who should normally be at the top in Germany. That’s still the feeling. Preparation for this game was good. They’re good at home. I’m expecting a team that fights for the points, that believes in itself at home. But we have full confidence in ourselves and are really up for this game,” said Kompany (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).

After a slew of injuries and illnesses, Kompany can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel with his squad and in a rare moment of fill transparency, the head coach let it slip that Josip Stanišić might be ready for a return to action.

“It’s about having the squad fully available at the right moment. That’s important. Dayot Upamecano was out but is now back. Raphaël Guerreiro was out but will be back from Monday or Tuesday. Josip Stanišić is probably back. Jamal, Alphonso Davies are back. Serge Gnabry was back against PSV. Nicolas Jackson is back here again. I’m happy just to be able to say that. It could be a good month by the end of February, and we’ll need the whole squad to push hard from March,” Kompany said. “(Jamal Musiala)looked very fresh for 45 minutes in Eindhoven. That surprised me. A look at the numbers was good. He played well and his numbers were at a very high physical level. But then he couldn’t carry on, which happens. He kept going for 15 minutes and scored. Jamal has taken another step forward. He won’t be able to play three times a week, but he’s slowly getting fit. That’s good for us.”

It remains to be seen just how much the head coach will rotate against 14th place Hamburger SV, but the coach does appear to have some solid options.
