After the final whistle of the Five Star boys basketball title game between Mainland and Atlantic, two players were involved in a scuffle.
DAYTONA BEACH — Staff members, players and school security broke up a fight after the conclusion of Mainland's76-71 victory over Atlantic in the Five Star Conference boys basketball tournament finals on Friday, Jan. 30.
A couple players from both teams started jawing at each other during the handshake line prior to the scuffle, which lasted approximately 30 seconds. Tempers flared as both sides worked to separate the crowd that had formed.
After the two players were split up, the teams were sent to their respective locker rooms. Nobody was injured in the skirmish.
"I don't even know what happened," Mainland coach Joe Giddens said. "I'm just glad everybody's safe."
"It's two kids competing, there was a little talk back and forth," Atlantic coach Travis Norfolk said. "I'll be 100% honest, the refs got to do a better job of just nipping that stuff before we get to that point. I feel like they just didn't do a good job of that. Those two kids are just competitors."
The game marked the end of the regular season for both squads as the district playoffs tip off next week. It's unknown at the time of publication whether any punishments will be handed out.
