Richard Hughes forced into making Liverpool choice as transfer target handed 'ultimatum'

Now that there's just under half of Liverpool's season left, every point counts.

So, when the Reds were beaten 3-2 by Bournemouth thanks to a last-minute strike from Amine Adli, it was the worst outcome possible for the club.

To be fair to the Cherries, with the way that they played they deserved to win all three points.

However, the fact that their winner came during the final moments of the clash was a bit of a kick in the teeth.

A lot of the Reds' poor performances this season have been due to the lack of form and consistency with their back line.

This is one of the main reasons why fans are demanding that new defenders get brought in, and, although Liverpool know that they need reinforcements, they've shown little-to-no interest in bringing someone in.

However, that could all be about to change.

Bayern Munich hand Dayot Upamecano contract 'ultimatum'

Ever since Giovanni Leoni was ruled out for the season, links with new centre-backs have emerged.

Initially, Marc Guehi was the man expected to join the Anfield outfit, but, in the end, he chose to make the move to Manchester City.

This forced Liverpool to look elsewhere for a new centre-back with many Bundesliga talents popping up as potential targets.

Dayot Upamecano and Nico Schlotterbeck are the most likely transfers for Liverpool to get over the line.

However, after a fresh update from Christian Falk, it seems like Richard Hughes is going to have to make a decision on the former of the two sooner than he'd have wanted to.

The report on his CF Bayern Insider website states that Bayern Munich have issued their contract rebel an 'ultimatum.'

The Frenchman must decide whether he wants to accept the contract they submitted by the middle of February.

Bayern believe that the offer they've given him was 'very good' and have insisted that it will not be 'improved' any further.

His contract is set to expire at the end of the season and due to this, Liverpool have been linked with a potential move.

Liverpool must ensure that Dayot Upamecano is the right transfer target for them

If Liverpool fail to bring in any new centre-backs before the start of the 2026-27 season, they'll find themselves in a whole world of trouble.

If each of their defenders was fit, they'd have just enough cover for each of their four positions.

However, since Jeremie Frimpong and Joe Gomez can't seem to keep away from the injury table for more than a month, it's clear that new players need to be brought in.

Upamecano may end up costing them nothing to sign but, if his wages are worth over £300k-per-week then he'd need to be the Reds' best defender.

Other players such as Schlotterbeck and even Ezri Konsa could be better options for Liverpool when wages are taken into account.

This ultimatum has forced Liverpool's hand as, if they want him, it's clear that they're going to have to cough up the money before the middle of February otherwise Upamecano's deal with Bayern will be off the table.

The next few transfers that Liverpool make could define their future, so every move counts. This is why the Reds need to be careful and ensure that they're doing the right thing.
