AS Saint-Étienne’s Joao Ferreira (24) was always going to miss a game or two. Already one goal down at home to Boulogne-sur-Mer on Saturday, the Portuguese defender was sent off shortly after, in the 26th minute.

The defender, who joined on a permanent transfer from EFL Championship side Watford over the summer, was left furious to the extent that, on his way back to the dressing room, he punched a wall with his right hand.

Ferreira will now face the consequences of that outburst, with L’Équipe reporting that the right-back has had to undergo surgery on his fractured hand and will now be set for a period of absence of at least two months, perhaps more. The former Portugal youth international has played 15 games for Les Verts this season, as they seek to return to Ligue 1.

Saturday’s 1-0 loss to Boulogne-sur-Mer was the final game of the Eirik Horneland era, with Philippe Monatanier coming in to replace him. However, the former Toulouse FC manager won’t be able to rely on Ferreira for quite a while.
