Roger Goodell reacts to Bill Belichick’s Hall of Fame snub

Roger Goodell was naturally asked about Bill Belichick at his press conference on Monday.

SAN FRANCISCO — Roger Goodell thinks Bill Belichick belongs in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

And he wanted to make it awfully clear that he and the NFL aren’t the reason the former Patriots coach won’t get in this year.

News leaked out last week that Belichick, the most successful coach in NFL history, had been denied a spot in the Hall of Fame.

That news sparked debate about the hall’s voting process as well as accusations against the voters. Goodell made it clear that whatever anyone believes, he had nothing to do with it.

“The Pro Football Hall of Fame is not in any way controlled by the NFL. We have no say in the voting process,” Goodell said at his press conference on Monday. “We don’t participate in the voting process. But I want to make sure that the question doesn’t lead people to that conclusion.

“I think it’s really an important honor and it’s something that is something that should be done with a lot of clarity, a lot of understanding of what’s expected of those voters. I’m not even sure I’m aware of it. I’ve never been part of that process.

“Listen, Bill Belichick’s record goes without saying. Same with the Patriots. And Robert Kraft, who’s also a candidate,” Goodell added. “They are spectacular. They contributed so much to this game and I believe they’ll be Hall of Famers.”
