Instead, the agreement would take Messi back to where his professional journey began in Argentina.

Messi set for emotional Newell’s Old Boys return

Tuttomercatoweb is reporting that Lionel Messi has reached an agreement in principle to return to Newell’s Old Boys, the Argentine club where he played as a youth before moving to Barcelona.

The proposed deal would see Messi join Newell’s on a six-month loan from January 2027 through to June 2027, before returning to Inter Miami, where he remains under contract until 2028.

Newell’s president Ignacio Boero is understood to have played a central role in the negotiations, which have been progressing behind the scenes for several months.

Security talks and Inter Miami agreement key to deal

A major obstacle in previous discussions had been concerns over security for Messi and his family in Rosario, where Newell’s are based.

Boero has reportedly held talks with Santa Fe governor Maximiliano Pullaro to outline a security plan designed to provide Messi with the necessary assurances.

The arrangement would not impact Messi’s long-term future in Major League Soccer, with the forward expected to return to Inter Miami after the short spell in Argentina.

While the agreement is not yet final and the last word rests with Messi himself, the proposal would allow him to reconnect with his roots without closing the chapter on his current MLS career.
