He continues to fight his way back.
According to a report from Football Scoop, Jeremy Pruitt might be nearing a return to the sidelines of a power-four school. The former Tennessee head coach has been connected to Mike Locksley and Maryland for a ‘key defensive position.’
Pruitt and Locksley coached together on Nick Saban’s Alabama staff and may be headed for a reunion here. Pruitt is still riding out his six-year show-cause penalty, although he’s been working the courts to fight the NCAA on that. He returned to college coaching last year with Jacksonville State, working with his former defensive coordinator Charles Kelly as an analyst off the field. Pruitt received a preliminary induction from an Alabama court to take the role.
Pruitt was fired by Tennessee in a messy split after numerous recruiting violations were found back in 2021. Tennessee fired Pruitt with cause as a result, proceeding to clean out the athletic department and hire Danny White as athletics director on top of the football makeover.
The now 51-year-old coach also has made a stop at his high school alma mater, coaching junior high basketball and serving as a P.E. coach during his show-cause.
His potential official title with Maryland is currently unknown. Locksley has a full on-field defensive staff as things currently stand, complete with a defensive coordinator and a co-defensive coordinator. Pruitt has previously specialized in defensive backs, although this could be simply for another analyst position. Any on-field role seems highly unlikely.
Maryland went 4-8 last season and Locksley will open the season directly on the hot seat.
