What is ski mountaineering?
Ski mountaineering can be traced back to 1897 when Wilhelm Paulcke crossed the Bernese Oberland on skis. The sport became more popular in the 21st century, and participation figures have increased from 33,000 athletes in 2010-11 to 94,500 in 2019-20.
Participants in ski mountaineering events will ascend a mountain on skis and by foot before descending back down the mountain on skis. Men's and women's sprints are short with a high level of intensity, while the mixed relay consists of one man and one woman taking turns on the course.
The goal is simple: Be the first athlete to cross the finish line.
