ST. LOUIS – Kylee Doremus has been meeting with her team at Shriners Children’s Hospital in St. Louis.
“A month ago, I got my leg fitted for me,” said Doremus, who is a Shriners Children’s St. Louis patient and Youth Parapan Games Gold Medalist. “They make a mold of my leg. Today, I got to try it on for the first time, and they have to do some adjustments to make it perfect for me.”
On Friday, Kylee’s father, Larry, accompanied her to see how the new prosthetic would fit. They have been visiting this location for the past nine years.
“At 11 months, they put a prosthetic on her, and she hasn’t looked back,” Larry said. “We all have challenges and mountains that just look a little bit different, and that doesn’t mean you can’t succeed if you want to.”
Thanks to prosthetics, she’s played volleyball standing up. Kylee competed for the first time in Chile for the 2025 Youth Parapan Games in sitting volleyball, winning a gold medal.
This high schooler knows that surrounding yourself with a good team can lead to success and shared experiences. No one knows that better than Kylee’s prosthetist, Darren Rottman, a former Shriner’s kid with an artificial leg.
“Then you hear, ‘I didn’t even know that until we saw it,’” Rottmann said. “We didn’t know that you were, when you were walking in. I think it just gives them a sense of to relax. Everything will be alright in the world in the long run.”

“Know that you can do the standing or do what everyone else is doing,” Kylee said. “I didn’t know about volleyball, and I fell in love with it standing. And then, knowing what you can do and others can do, and you can do it better, too.”
