Newcastle United have set a high asking price for Sandro Tonali ahead of the summer transfer window after rejecting speculation around a late January move, according to a report by Metro’s Louis Sealey.

Sealey reports that Newcastle have “slapped a huge asking price” on the midfielder amid expected interest from Arsenal and Chelsea once the season ends, with the figure floated around £100 million.

Tonali became the subject of unexpected speculation on the final day of the January transfer window, with Arsenal linked to a late approach and imminent signing of the Italy international.

However, Newcastle dismissed the claims that they ever were in talks over a deadline-day deal, albeit Tonali’s agent, Giuseppe Riso, left the door open for a future move away from Tyneside while trying to calm the waters by saying Tonali’s camp didn’t have any contact with Arsenal.

“We never had any conversation with Arsenal,” Riso said. “Newcastle were never going to let Tonali leave in January. There’s absolutely nothing into it. We didn’t even talk about it.”

Riso stressed that any discussion about a transfer remains premature, but he’s clearly thinking about it and setting deadlines ahead of time.

“It’s not even being discussed now,” “We will see around March about Sandro’s valuation but only if Newcastle decide to open doors,” Riso said.

While a January move did not materialise, Sealey reported that Newcastle are “braced for more interest” in the summer, with Arsenal among several Premier League clubs monitoring the situation.

The report said Chelsea and Manchester City have also emerged as potential suitors, while Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is described as a strong supporter of Tonali’s profile.

Despite that interest, Newcastle are not actively looking to sell Tonali, who remains under contract until 2029.

Tonali joined Newcastle from AC Milan in 2023 and has established himself as a key player under Eddie Howe. It’s also believed Tonali is happy at Newcastle and not seeking a move, but as it was the case with Alexander Isak last summer, it’s never too soon to move to the (probable) Premier League champion and a quadruple contender, ain’t it?
