High school swimming: 6A region championship results

Here’s a recap of the results from this past week’s three region swimming meets in Class 6A as the teams prepare for the state tournament at BYU on Feb. 20-21.

The three region champions for the girls were Brighton, Mountain Ridge and Lone Peak, while the three boys region champs were the same three teams.

Lone Peak’s girls and American Fork’s boys are the defending 6A state champs heading into the final meet of the season in two weeks.

Of the 16 individual events, nine featured new 6A season-best times at the three region meets.

For the girls, Wasatch’s Kasenya Keller (200 free), Syracuse’s Layleigh Turner (200 I.M.), Lehi’s Alyssa Soderquist (100 fly), Wasatch’s Ana Diedrichs (100 free) and Wasatch’s Paige Hicken (100 breast) all recorded the new best time in 6A at their respective region meets.

For the boys, Brighton’s Luan Barnard was the only swimmer who turned in the best 6A times of the season at region meets, and he did it four times.

In his individual races, Barned set new season-bests in the 200 I.M. and the 100 butterfly, and then he also swam the lead leg in Brighton’s 200 and 400 freestyle relays and set the top 50 and 100 free times in the process.

Barnard’s four times are also the best across all four classifications this season.
