While there is no official announcement yet on Klint Kubiak taking the Las Vegas Raiders head coaching job, it is pretty clear where the soon-to-be former Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator stands on the subject.
Kubiak and the Raiders reached an agreement on Feb. 1 to make the move happen, but nothing could be confirmed due to the former’s participation in the Super Bowl. Obviously, Kubiak wanted to keep the focus on his team’s preparation for the game, which is completely understandable.
After the Seahawks soundly dominated the New England Patriots on Sunday, however, Kubiak made it clear in an interview with NFL Network’s Stacey Dales that he had no intention of changing course.
“You guys know I'm going to Las Vegas, I'm fired up about it," Kubiak said. ... "Hell yeah, I'm going. Of course I'm going."
It had to undoubtedly been a tough sell by the Raiders to convince one of the NFL’s brightest young offensive minds to go from a Super Bowl winner to a team tied for the worst record last season at 3-14.
Kubiak now becomes the fourth head coach of the Raiders in as many seasons, which is already a less than ideal starting point. The long-term future of edge rusher and defensive cornerstone Maxx Crosby is also unclear, but one thing is certain: a deal tells the NFL world that the Raiders are officially rebuilding.
However, it is not like the Raiders are without their selling points.
Tight end Brock Bowers overcame injuries to enjoy more success in his second season, and running back Ashton Jeanty flashed serious potential during his rookie campaign. On top of this, the Raiders will likely be drafting Heisman Trophy winner and national champion quarterback Fernando Mendoza with the first overall pick in April, hopefully ending the team’s recent struggles at the position. Those offensive triplets make for a good nucleus to start building a future contender in Las Vegas.
With enough time and a little patience, Kubiak could very well get the Raiders to the same stage that he was on less than 24 hours ago.
