Otega Oweh earns weekly SEC award

Up, up, and Oweh!

Kentucky Wildcats senior guard Otega Oweh has been named the SEC Co-Player of the Week after guiding his team to wins over the Oklahoma Sooners and No. 25 Tennessee Volunteers. Oweh shared the weekly award with Alabama Crimson Tide standout Labaron Philon Jr.

In those victories, Oweh averaged 22.5 points (60.7% shooting), 3.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. He’s now scored 20+ points in nine of 11 SEC games. He had a season-high-tying 24 against his former Oklahoma team, then led the Cats with 21 points in the upset of the Volunteers, completing a season sweep for the second consecutive year.

While offense gets the headlines, it was Oweh’s defense in the second half and his passing in the final minute that sparked the Wildcats’ comeback win after they trailed 47-33 at halftime but outscored the Vols 41-24 in the second half. It was the largest halftime deficit ever overcome at Rupp Arena for the Wildcats.

With Kentucky trailing by one in the final minute, Oweh drove into the paint and hit Collin Chandler on the wing for a 3-point shot that gave them the lead for good.

Oweh is now averaging 20.6 points (50.3% shooting), 4.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.7 steals per game in SEC play. He’s just five points shy of becoming a 1,000-point scorer at Kentucky and becoming just the fifth transfer in program history to hit that mark.
