David Moyes emerges as rival to Chelsea in race for Premier League free agent

Chelsea’s January transfer window did not bring in any new players, but they did make a significant change on the sidelines, swapping Enzo Maresca for Liam Rosenior.

Since then, Rosenior has made a strong impression at Stamford Bridge, winning seven of his first nine matches in charge. The only two defeats came against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

Even with the strong performances, injuries have started to pile up. Back in January, Chelsea put together a three-man shortlist of centre-backs to target ahead of the summer window.

Their top choice was Jeremy Jacquet, but he has already agreed to join Liverpool next season. Alongside him were Como’s Jacobo Ramon and Bournemouth’s Marcos Senesi.

Senesi, who has 115 appearances for Bournemouth since signing from Feyenoord in 2022, has been a reliable presence in the Cherries’ backline over the past couple of seasons. His current deal runs until the end of this campaign.

The Argentine defender will turn 29 next month, and while that profile does not typically fit Chelsea’s recent transfer strategy, there are indications they are considering him nonetheless. Tutto Juve journalist Mirko Di Natale claims the Blues remain keen to bring him in.

The Blues are one of seven clubs reportedly eyeing up a move for Senesi. Borussia Dortmund have emerged as the latest to make contact, while Everton, Brighton and Crystal Palace are also believed to be monitoring his situation.

Di Natale shared via X: “Dortmund is the latest club to have inquired about Marcos Senesi. Juventus, Roma, as Brighton, Chelsea, Everton and Crystal Palace are the teams most interested.”

Chelsea might need Marcos Senesi’s experience at centre-back

Chelsea have plenty of young talent at centre-back, including Levi Colwill, Tosin Adarabioyo, Trevoh Chalobah, Wesley Fofana, Mamadou Sarr, Benoit Badiashile, Aaron Anselmino, Josh Acheampong and Jorrel Hato.

Anselmino is currently out on loan, along with Axel Disasi, while Tosin is dealing with an injury. Beyond Fofana and Chalobah, the squad does not have many Premier League-tested leaders in defence.

Senesi could help fill that gap. Signing him on a free would make sense for a lot of clubs. The Argentine would bring valuable experience to Chelsea’s back line if they decide to move for him this summer.
