Jackson looked set for a long run at Chelsea after becoming the fifth-fastest player in club history to score 20 Premier League goals.
However, consistency proved hard to find. He also picked up a couple of suspensions that did not help his standing with the coaching staff, and eventually found himself on the outside looking in.
Even in that context, Chelsea tried to cancel Jackson’s loan deal to Bayern Munich just as it was being finalised.
Following a hamstring injury to new signing Liam Delap, the board told the Senegalese striker, who was already in Munich for his medical, to fly back to London immediately and provide squad cover – but he refused.
And despite all that drama, Bayern do not seem interested in keeping him around beyond this season.
Nicolas Jackson faces uncertain future at Stamford Bridge
Chelsea have opted for a more structured approach, bringing in Emanuel Emegha from Strasbourg. The forward is set to join in the summer from their sister club, giving them another option up front.
It adds another name to the mix alongside Joao Pedro, Delap and Jackson – a bit much considering Liam Rosenior tends to use just one striker. That has left questions over where exactly the 24-year-old fits into this group.
And it appears he is not high up on the list.
TeamTALK reports that Jackson is not viewed internally as a long-term option, which has placed even more scrutiny on Delap’s performances.
Questions surround Nicolas Jackson and Liam Delap’s long-term fit at Chelsea
Jackson and Delap bring very different skill sets to Chelsea’s attack. The Senegalese star thrives in build-up play and transitions, while the Briton fits the mould of a classic centre-forward.
In two seasons with the club, Jackson notched 30 goals and 12 assists over 81 appearances. He linked up well with Cole Palmer at times, prompting Paul Merson to suggest recently that Palmer has missed his influence.
Delap has mainly featured off the bench, logging about 1,096 minutes across all competitions. But he has chipped in with some important goals, including one during the Club World Cup and another in a recent defeat to Fulham.
Even so, neither player has truly established themselves as a standout option for Chelsea just yet.
