The Caleb Wilson-less Heels found a way to finish top four in the ACC.
The North Carolina Tar Heels have officially locked up a double-bye in the ACC Tournament thanks to Miami’s win over SMU tonight. The talking heads were quite busy after the Heels beat Clemson last night in the Dean Dome, but the Hurricanes made sure to keep the math situation nice and simple by taking down the Mustangs on the road.
There are a few reason that the Heels locking up a double-bye is significant. First, it means that should Caleb Wilson not see action this weekend against Duke, it gives him a little extra time to get healthy before the postseason begins. Second, it means that Hubert Davis finishes with a top four finish in the conference, which is commendable considering how up and down conference play was for UNC at times. It means more than it normally would considering the fact that Caleb Wilson has missed the last stretch of games as well. There was a lot of doom and gloom after he and Henri Veesaar missed action, but ultimately everything worked out alright for the guys in Carolina blue.
Finally, what this means is that UNC doesn’t need to beat Duke to get a little extra rest, but it also means that the Heels would have to play them for a third time in the semifinal round in order to get to the championship game. The Heels have not faired well in the third meeting against the Blue Devils in recent history, but of course there’s one particular time that they met for a third time that wasn’t the ACC Tournament. This guy named Caleb Love can tell you all about it, but it was truly an exception to what has happened most of the time.
Still, it will be good for the Heels to have a little pressure taken off them for this weekend’s big game. How is everyone feeling about UNC’s spot in the tournament? Let us know in the comments below.
