This is the Maryland Minute, a short story followed by a roundup of Terps-related news.
Maryland football alum Stefon Diggs will be released by the New England Patriots when the new league year starts on March 11, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero first reported.
The Patriots will save $16.8 million by cutting Diggs, who was set to be owed $26.5 million in 2026.
The former Terp enjoyed a bounceback 2025 in New England after tearing his ACL with the Houston Texans the year prior. Diggs led the Patriots in receptions (85) and receiving yards (1,013) alongside four touchdowns, and helped his team reach Super Bowl 60. Diggs had three catches for 37 yards in the loss to the Seahawks.
Diggs’ release also comes with the receiver facing criminal charges, including felony strangulation, stemming from a December encounter with his former personal chef. The woman claims Diggs “smacked her across the face” and “tried to choke her using the crook of his elbow around her neck,” according to ESPN. Diggs has pleaded not guilty.
