Connor Zilisch is quite the wheelman at just 19 years of age. He sits atop the Xfinity Series points standings with five wins this season, but he showcased his talent on a different level during this past Saturday’s race at Iowa Speedway.
At one point in the race, Zilisch got loose in Turns 1 and 2. Zilisch looked like he was about to go for a spin but miraculously saved it. While sideways and busy making the save, he still found time to give Daniel Dye the bird through his window net.
Kevin Harvick approved of the move. Harvick, however, said that Zilisch must have not been too mad at Dye.
“That’s a lot of effort for that finger. I would have been worried about saving it first, but it’s pretty neat and impressive to see that he pulled it off,” Harvick said on Tuesday’s Happy Hour podcast. “I always figure, though, if I’m gonna flip somebody off, I want them to see it. I want to wait until they can see it for a long time to make sure they know that I’m pissed.
“So, if I’m gonna flip you off, I’m gonna flip you off for the whole straightaway, in the corner and the next straightaway. However long I leave my finger out, that’s how mad they know I am. That [what Zilisch did] was just a ‘Hey, I’m just a little mad.'”
Connor Zilisch’s win streak comes to an end at Iowa
Zilisch finished fourth at Iowa which by his standards of late, might have been a bit disappointing. He came into the race riding a three-race win streak. He now has an average finish of 2.3 over his last 10 starts.
Zilisch has caught up to JR Motorsports teammate Justin Allgaier in the race for the regular season championship. In that same span where Zilisch has been dominant, Allgaier has a 16.5 average finish. The two came together at Iowa after Zilisch made it three-wide into Turn 1 on Lap 214. Zilisch got loose and slid up into Ross Chastain, who collided with Allgaier and sent him around. Allgaier finished 15th. Zilisch apologized to Allgaier after the race.
“I feel really bad for the 7 team,” Zilisch said, via Frontstretch. ‘They’ve had a rough last few races, and today I definitely played a little bit of a part in that. So, yeah, I’ll look back and see what I could have done differently, but I’m excited for the rest of the year.”
