Georgia high school football is getting set to kick off its 2025 regular season in less than two weeks, and the Peach State will once again produce some of the best talent in the country.
The On3 Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule and margin of victory. According to the model — the state of Georgia features 11 top-100 programs in America.
1. Buford Wolves
The Wolves made it to the Georgia high school football Class 6A state semifinals but lost that game to Carrollton. Despite that outcome, they’ve maintained their streak of double-digit-win seasons for over two decades.
While Buford will have another shot at the state title, they must survive the preliminaries first, starting with their August 14 game against Milton. To reach that goal, the Wolves will need solid outputs from their stacked offensive unit, led by quarterback DJ Hunter (Kentucky), offensive tackle Ben Mubenga (Arkansas), tight end Dream Rashad (Purdue), running back Dylan McCoy (NC State), quarterback Dayton Raiola (Nebraska), and four-star interior lineman Graham Houston (Georgia).
On the other hand, Buford’s elite defense includes four-star edge rusher Bryce Perry-Wright (Texas A&M) and four-star safety Tyriq Green (Georgia). Lining up with them are four-star edge rusher Dre Quinn (Clemson), three-star safety Nascar McCoy (Ole Miss), safety Jax Pope (Mississippi State), linebacker CJ Sibley, and safety Jameer Cantrell.
2. Carrollton Trojans
The Trojans won their first 14 games, only to lose to Grayson in the Georgia high school football Class 6A state championship showdown. This result marks another year in which Carrollton fell short in the playoffs.
Before getting another crack at the title, they must do well during the regular season, starting with their August 15 game against Woodward Academy. Quarterback Mason Holtzclaw will be in command of an offense that includes four-star wide receiver Ryan Mosley (Georgia), three-star running back Kimauri Farmer (Liberty), three-star wideout Peyton Zachary (UNLV), and interior offensive lineman Zykie Helton (Georgia).
On defense, the Trojans will rely on four-star cornerback Dorian Barney (Michigan) and three-star linebacker CJ Gamble (Georgia Tech).
3. Milton Eagles
The Eagles completed a perfect 15-0 season after defeating Langston Hughes for the Georgia high school football Class 5A state championship. In addition to winning the 2023 Class 7A state title, Milton has a 25-game winning streak dating back to that year.
The 2024 Public School National Champions can extend their streak starting in their season opener against top-ranked Buford on August 14. On offense, Quarterback Derrick Baker will work with four-star tight end Grant Haviland and three-star wide receiver Jordan Carrasquillo. Meanwhile, linebacker Billy Weivoda and safety Tristan Lester will lead Milton’s defense.
4. Grayson Rams
After losing their 2024 season opener to Collins Hill, the Rams embarked on a 14-game winning streak, including their victory over Carrollton for the Georgia high school football Class 6A state championship.
Grayson will begin their title defense against the only team that defeated them last season. That game will be on August 15, and the Rams will need four-star quarterback Travis Burgess (North Carolina) to play splendidly in their season opener. Burgess will try to activate wide receivers Dawson Quarterman (East Carolina) and Ty’Jae Clark in the passing game.
On the other side of the ball, five-star linebacker and Georgia’s top-ranked senior, Tyler Atkinson, will be their leader on defense. Joining him to stop opponents are four-star linebacker Anthony Davis (Ole Miss), safety Hannibal Navies (Kansas State), edge rusher T.K. Cunningham, defensive lineman Cameron McGee, cornerback Rilee Drew, safety London Goggans, linebacker Eli Harris, and edge rusher Lawrence Brown (North Carolina).
5. Lee County Trojans
The Trojans raced to 13 consecutive victories before suffering a Georgia high school football Class 5A state semifinal defeat against eventual champions Milton. It was such a promising season, as proven by allowing five opponents to score seven points or less.
Lee County will return to action against Warner Robbins on August 15. Four-star prospect Jaden Upshaw will lead them on offense, while linebacker Gregory Batson is their defensive anchor.
