After Saturday morning’s practice, Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer says the Crimson Tide may be one step closer to naming their starting quarterback.
"I feel like we're getting closer," DeBoer said after this recent practice. After being asked if he anticipates naming a starter after the second scrimmage, DeBoer answered, "I would anticipate that being the case.”
DeBoer praised his QBs for not throwing any interceptions during practice and for continuing to get better.
Former Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron says that the quarterback competition he believes comes down to two guys: Ty Simpson and Austin Mack.
“I love having talk for fans and trying to build it up and everything, but Keelon Russell is not going to play,” McCarron said via “The Dynasty” podcast. “He is young. He is super talented. It’s just not his time right now. It’s Ty, Austin Mack. Everybody that I’ve talked to, that I hear from up there, that’s what it comes down to. It’s Ty’s job to lose, and if Ty just starts playing extremely bad during camp, well then they got to go back to the drawing board and say, all right, well, do we ride with him in this first game or do we go with Austin Mack? They have a bunch of guys that are capable that are plenty talented enough, but it’s not a bad thing.”
This shouldn’t be a surprise to many, as talented as Russell is, he is going up against two veteran quarterbacks, and many expected coming into this season that, as McCarron has mentioned, this is Simpson’s job to lose but make no doubt about it, reports have been that Mack has been pushing Simpson and has looked equally as good.
By this time next week, we may know who the quarterback is for this Alabama football team.
