We're about three weeks away from the massive college football matchup between No. 1 Texas and No. 2 Ohio State.

The game will feature some of the nation's top players in 2025 and is the first time in history that the two highest ranked teams will meet in the season opener. Needless to say, the storylines for this particular matchup are endless but each team will surely need their best players to step up in big moments.

One of those key players for Texas will be sophomore edge Colin Simmons. The former five-star recruit for the 2024 cycle was recently named the best defensive player in the SEC for the 2025 season by PFF.

"Simmons ended up winning the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award, given to the best true freshman in college football," Dalton Wasserman said. "His 18.6% pressure rate was a top-15 mark in the nation, and he contributed in the run game to the tune of a 73.4 PFF grade. Simmons’ elite combination of bend and advanced pass-rushing moves is reminiscent of Von Miller."

The SEC is known as college football's powerhouse conference, so to be named as the best defensive player in the conference as a sophomore is quite the honor. As a true freshman in 2024, Simmons recorded a team-high nine sacks. He also tallied 14 tackles for loss.

Simmons will be tested right off the bat against Ohio State on Aug. 30.
