Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer heads back to the huddle after finishing off his reps during OU fall camp Aug 1. 2025

The Venmo account of Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer has quickly become college football’s top story. Screenshots from Mateer’s time at Washington State have popped up, with two having the term “sports gambling” in the caption. After social media caught wind, Mateer made his Venmo private and eventually released a statement on Tuesday to deny any wrongdoing.

Even so, conversation on the matter has continued. FOX’s Joel Klatt gave his thoughts, providing an animated reaction. Klatt believes in a world where many have been flowing in college football through NIL, nobody should be freaking out about Venmo captions from three years ago.

“So let me get this straight,” Klatt began on X, “we are gonna turn CFB into a lawless free for all with large sums of money flowing to players who can be free agents twice a year…but then gasp about three Venmo descriptions from 2022??? WHAT ARE WE DOING?!?!?”

Mateer is entering his first season in Norman with Oklahoma. He was the prized quarterback in the NCAA transfer portal this offseason after a successful 2024 at Washington State. Miami made a push to land Mateer but ultimately, there was not much doubt about where he would land.

The Sooners have a ton invested in Mateer, hoping he and new offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle can be the saviors of the team’s offense. Last year saw a mix of Jackson Arnold and Michael Hawkins struggle at quarterback, while former OC Seth Litrell was fired seven games into the schedule.

Oklahoma itself released a statement too, saying they are aware of the situation. However, they are not expecting an investigation from the NCAA because of the viral screenshots.

“OU Athletics provides ongoing education to its student-athletes, coaches, and staff on matters releated to sports gambling,” the Oklahoma statement said via Sooner Scoop’s George Stoia. “The department utilizes ProhiBet, which is an industry-standard service offering comprehensive moniotring of sports gambling activities. OU takes any allegations of gambling seriously and works closely with the NCAA in any situations of concern. OU Athletics is unaware off any NCAA investigation and has no reason to believe there is one pending.”

Aug. 30 marks the season opener for Oklahoma, hosting Illinois State. One week later will bring Michigan to town for one of the top nonconference games this year. Mateer is hoping to bring instant success to his new home, wanting to be in the College Football Playoff conversation.
