Barcelona relaxed about contract situation of first team star despite 2026 contract expiry

According to an update shared by Mundo Deportivo, it has come to light that Barcelona are in no hurry to finalise a new contract for Frenkie de Jong. 

The Dutch midfielder’s current deal runs until the end of the 2025/26 season, and both club and player have openly expressed their wish to continue together. 

De Jong remains an important part of Hansi Flick’s starting line-up, but one key factor is slowing down negotiations.

What’s the problem?

The midfielder is in the process of separating from his current agent Ali Dursun, a move that is proving complicated. Their contract reportedly runs until 2026, which makes it difficult for De Jong to end the relationship without paying a penalty. 

If the agreement is not terminated, any renewal commission would still go to Dursun, even if De Jong changes agents. This legal issue is delaying progress.

Despite this, Barcelona are relaxed about the situation. They trust De Jong’s stated desire to stay and know they have strong options in his position should things change. 

The likes of Gavi, Marc Casado, and Marc Bernal are all capable of playing as a pivot, which means the club will not be left short-handed.

Salary reduction key to renewal

Another factor in the negotiations is De Jong’s wages. He currently earns a salary that Barcelona want to reduce to match their financial structure. 

The club’s proposal is for a contract covering this season and two more, but with lower financial terms.

If De Jong accepts, it will be welcomed. If not, the club will not panic. Even if he were to leave for free at the end of his contract, Barcelona believe they have the squad depth to cope without him. 

In short, Barcelona are keeping their options open. If De Jong renews, it will be on terms the club are comfortable with. If he decides to move on, they will already have quality players ready to take his place.
