Stewart provides his perspective.
Bengals' Shemar Stewart breaks silence on Joe Burrow hit in practice that caused scuffle originally appeared on The Sporting News
On Wednesday, Cincinnati Bengals rookie Shemar Stewart declined to talk to reporters.
He had hit Joe Burrow awkwardly low after a pass rush, a total no-no in training camp. The quarterbacks are off limits, and it set off a scuffle.
On Friday, though, Stewart opened up to the media about what had happened.
First, he revealed what he said to Burrow after the play.
“I said 'You know, Joe, it was an accident. You know I never meant to do that,’” Stewart said.

Burrow's response, according to Stewart: “He said 'It's cool as long as you do it on Sundays, too.' He kept it cool and short and sweet, and we just forgot about it.”
Stewart explained how it happened in the first place:
“We know not to touch the main guy. I slipped. Next time I should just fall out of the way or something. I learned. On the loop, the ground gave way under my foot, and I was just falling. I had my head down, and I couldn't really see where I was going. All I knew is I was falling. Then the next you know."

Burrow, who has had injury troubles earlier in his NFL career, jogged away and wasn't hurt in any way.
Stewart didn't even mind the scuffle afterward.
“It was just a lot of love,” Stewart said. “A lot of passion on the field. You’ve got to get it out somehow. If you keep it in, it’s not going to be good for your team, or for yourself.”
Stewart, of course, made plenty of headlines for being the last 2025 first-round pick to sign his rookie contract.
But he's out on the field now, and the Bengals will be happy to see him getting past offensive linemen. They'll just hope he saves the rest of the hits for other teams.
