The New York Mets won the first game of their series against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday, improving their record to 64–55 while holding strong to second place in the NL East and the league's third wild-card spot. New York routed Atlanta 13-5.

Francisco Álvarez went 3-for-4 with two homers and four RBIs. Brandon Nimmo hit a two-run homer (2-for-5, 3 RBIs), and Brett Baty added a solo shot. But one player stole the spotlight.

Pete Alonso went 3-for-5 with three runs and three RBIs. He hit two long balls, becoming the Mets' all-time home run leader with 254, breaking Darryl Strawberry's record of 252, which had stood for 35 years.

Alonso also did it in fewer games than the legend. The slugger took just 965 games, 144 fewer than Strawberry.

With that performance, Alonso picked up another Player of the Game accolade and increased his season total to 28.

“As a kid, you don’t really think that it’s in the realm of possibility to be a franchise home run leader,” Alonso said, per MLB.com. “It’s a wild dream, to be honest. And it’s really special.”

“You’ve got to work hard at it in order to get a standing ovation here,” Nimmo noted, per MLB.com. “He definitely deserved it in that moment.”

Manager Carlos Mendoza summarized Alonso's reaction after achieving the feat.

“You watch that face and how much joy he had … it was hard to describe the face of Pete there,” Mendoza added, via MLB.com. “He was just enjoying the moment. It meant a lot to him.”
