“Last week we were not very good from an operational standpoint. Offensive pre snap penalties, illegal procedures, illegal formations,” Steve Sarkisian said about his offense. “We did a much better job of that today.“ — Texas had just 2 penalties today compared to last week’s 10-11.
“It’ll start into next week,” Sarkisian said about when the Ohio State game plan begins. “There’ll be a fair amount of work done. At the same time, we still have some training camp work that we need to do.”
Steve Sarkisian says there were “some things in the secondary I was encouraged by” in the scrimmage. Says Malik Muhammad had a good scrimmage. Said Jaylon Guilbeau has been steady. Praised Kade Phillips and Kobe Black.
Steve Sarkisian: “Defensively, we have 15-16 starter type players.”
Steve Sarkisian’s biggest concerns heading into Week 1? Ball security, tackling, pre snap penalties, and special teams. Sarkisian wants to make sure Texas does not give up free yards in any of these facets.
Sark says they ran about 135 or so plays this scrimmage.
Sarkisian says that winning on first down in road games is extremely important. Says the defense needs to be able to stop the run and limit explosives to generate 2nd and longs for his defense to thrive in.
Sarkisian mentions that in the scrimmage today “the ball got in space a little more” which put some stress on defenders as far as making open field tackles.
Steve Sarkisian mentions the one turnover in Saturday’s scrimmage was a fumbled exchange between the center and the QB. No names given.
Sarkisian said Jaydon Chatman stepped in for Trevor Goosby after he was nicked up. “I thought he did a nice job.” — “Him to get that exposure I think was good for him today.” Mentions also that going against Colin Simmons, Ethan Burke, and other Texas EDGEs is a challenge.
Sarkisian says Trey Owens, Matthew Caldwell, and KJ Lacey each did good things: “Level of consistency is critical. I thought KJ showed up today and had some nice drives.”
Sark says Lacey led a TD drive and a FG drive in the two-minute drill portion of practice.
Who made explosive plays today? Sark mentions Ryan Wingo, Kaliq Lockett, Daylan McCutcheon, James Simon, Christian Clark, and Quintrevion Wisner.
Steve Sarkisian says he’s “unbelievably impressed” by CJ Baxter in what he’s done recovering from his injury. Sark says Baxter was mature in his recovery and as a teammate and has earned the respect of his teammates because of how he went through the process. “His confidence continues to grow.”
Sarkisian on CJ Baxter: “I was set on being overly cautious and patient with him in the season. I’ve changed my tune.” Sarkisian says they’ll be more aggressive with using Baxter early in the season and told him as much recently.
Sark on red zone: “was pretty good. I thought we missed a couple opportunities quite frankly.”
Sark on FG kicking: “was pretty good.”
Says there were twos and ones on the FG unit. “I know we blocked one.” – “Might have been Alex January, but I’m not sure.”
