This could be big for Boston.

The Boston Red Sox may finally have found a solution at first base.

It certainly took long enough.

On Sunday night, though, ESPN's Jeff Passan reported that Nathaniel Lowe and the Red Sox are heading toward agreement on a deal.

Lowe was designated for assignment by the Washington Nationals earlier this week. He hit a grand slam in his last game with the Nats.

Washington added Lowe from the Rangers this offseason, and he admittedly hasn't lived up to his career numbers. His .216 batting average is 47 points below his career number.

Still, Lowe has hit 17 doubles, 16 homers and driven in 68 runs while walking at a decent rate.

He's 30 years old and has previously won a Gold Glove and a Silver Slugger award.

This is a big fella with a sweet left-handed swing who can also field his position.

It's certainly rare for someone like Lowe to be available to a playoff contender in mid-August, but that's the situation the Nationals created, and the Red Sox will gladly take advantage.

Since Triston Casas went down early in the year with a season-ending injury, first base has been a spot that the Red Sox have used stopgaps at. Some have hit very well, but it never felt like it was fully settled.

If Lowe can play to the best version of himself, he can hold down that spot, certainly against right-handed pitching.

It's a move that Boston fans may not notice, because of its timing, but it's one that the Boston faithful will want to catch up with soon enough. Lowe can really play, and now he's with the Red Sox.
