The Indiana Fever took on the Connecticut Sun on Sunday, hoping to rebound after back-to-back losses to the Dallas Wings and Washington Mystics.

In the second quarter, with the Fever trailing 28-13, Sun guard Bria Hartley drove into the lane and kicked a pass to the corner. Fever guard Lexie Hull intercepted it, but in the process, Hartley collided with Sophie Cunningham’s right knee. Cunningham immediately went down in pain, clutching her knee as play briefly continued on the other end.

Cunningham needed help from trainers to head to the locker room and was ruled out for the remainder of the game.

Immediately after the injury, Cunningham’s sister, Lindsey Cunningham, took to social media and sounded off on the WNBA after no call was made on the play.

"@WNBA maybe you should focus less on fining players for commenting on your poor officiating & more about hiring officials that are able to call a consistent game and protect your athletes," Lindsey Cunningham said. "Pathetic. Praying for you @sophaller."

Cunningham Adds to the Long List of Injured Fever Guards

This season has been filled with injuries for the Fever, especially at the guard position. Sophie Cunningham injured her ankle in Indiana’s preseason finale, forcing her to miss the first two games of the season.

She eventually returned, but then Caitlin Clark went down with a left quad injury and later a groin injury, which has now kept the reigning Rookie of the Year out of 23 games, including Sunday’s matchup with the Sun.

But that wasn’t all. Guards Aari McDonald and Sydney Colson both suffered season-ending injuries in the same game on August 7 against the Phoenix Mercury. McDonald sustained a fracture in her right foot, while Colson tore her left ACL.

It’s still unclear how severe Cunningham’s latest injury is, but with her sidelined, the Fever are down to just two healthy guards who began the season on the roster: Kelsey Mitchell and Lexie Hull.
