The Indiana Fever faced another setback on Sunday during the first half against the Connecticut Sun. The team was already without star point guard Caitlin Clark, as well as Sydney Colson and Aari McDonald, who both recently suffered season-ending injuries in the same game just over a week ago. Now, two-way guard Sophie Cunningham has been added to the list.

Cunningham, in her first season with the Fever, left the game in the first half after Bria Hartley of the Sun collided with her knee while driving baseline and attempting a pass. Cunningham fell to the floor in visible pain and was eventually ruled out shortly after returning to the locker room.

While knee collisions are not uncommon in basketball, some believe Hartley could have avoided the impact. One of those critics is Cunningham’s sister, Lindsey, who took to social media after the injury to call out the WNBA and its officiating.
“WNBA, maybe you should focus less on fining players for commenting on your poor officiating and more on hiring officials who can call a consistent game and protect your athletes. Pathetic. Praying for you, [Sophie].”

Lindsey’s frustration stems from the WNBA fining her sister Sophie multiple times this season for speaking out about poor officiating in games involving the Fever.
Cunningham has been a pivotal part of the Fever rotation this season. With nine games remaining after Sunday’s clash against the Sun, Indiana cannot afford another injury.

The team still has no timetable for Caitlin Clark’s return, though head coach Stephanie White said they hope Clark is back before the end of the regular season. Now, the focus is on Cunningham’s recovery, with the hope that her injury is not serious enough to keep her sidelined long-term—a scenario that would be a massive blow for the team.
