A week after showing out in the Houston Texans preseason opener against the Minnesota Vikings, veteran wide receiver John Metchie III is on the move.

According to multiple reports, the Texans are reportedly trading Metchie to the Philadelphia Eagles, where he'll reunite with his former Alabama teammate Devonta Smith.

Metchie, 25, led all receivers with five receptions for 45 yards in the Texans 20-10 loss to the Vikings on Saturday, August 9. A week later, he hauled in one of three passes for eight yards in a 20-3 win over the Carolina Panthers.

The Texans selected Metchie 44th overall in the 2022 NFL Draft. He was the ninth wide receiver selected, which included his Crimson Tide teammate Jameson Williams, taken 12th by the Detroit Lions. Metchie and Smith, his new Eagles teammate, played together for two seasons in Tuscaloosa, winning a FBS Championship in 2020.

After having to sit out his rookie season with Leukemia, Metchie III returned to the field in 2023. In two full seasons with the Texans, he totaled 40 receptions for 415 yards and one touchdown. Metchie was listed behind rookie Jayden Higgins and veteran Justin Watson in the third wide receiver spot for the Texans preseason game against the Panthers.

In return for Metchie and a 2026 sixth-round pick, the Texans are reportedly getting tight end Harrison Bryant and the 2026 fifth-round pick. Bryant, 27, is likely a replacement for Brevin Jordan who suffered a season-ending keen injury last week. He's played in 78 career games across five seasons with the Cleveland Browns and Las Vegas Raiders, registering 98 receptions for 977 yards and 10 touchdowns.
