Ricky Williams believes the Texas Longhorns football team can make a run and win it all in 2025. In an interview with On3, the former Texas star was asked if the team could win the College Football Playoff National Championship game this season.

“I think for the first time in a long time, we have a legitimate shot, not based on our hopes, but based on the track record,” Ricky Williams told On3. “Back-to-back years to the College Football Playoff, everyone’s excited about [Arch Manning], and I think [Steve Sarkisian] knows what he’s doing at Texas. I think it takes a special kind of coach to win in Texas, and he’s figured it out.”

Williams might be right about Sarkisian, as he has led Texas to back-to-back appearances in the College Football Playoff. In 2024, the Longhorns finished the year with a 13-3 record and reached the semifinals of the playoffs before losing to the eventual champion Ohio State.

But will Texas be able to take it a step further in 2025? College football analyst Josh Pate recently predicted the College Football Playoff participants, and he said Texas will be the No. 3 seed and have a first-round bye.

Ricky Williams helped the Texas Longhorns have success

Earlier this month, the AP released its first top 25 poll, and Texas came in at No. 1. “Texas is geared up to win a national title this season with what they have at their disposal. Arch Manning steps in at quarterback and, arguably, he’ll be the most responsible,” On3‘s Nick Kosko wrote. “Steve Sarkisian has led this program to the CFP semifinals twice, but it’s time to take the next step. They’re all in to become kings of the college football world.”

Ricky Williams played for Texas from 1995 to 1998 and won the Heisman Trophy during his final season with the program. In his four years with the Longhorns, Williams rushed for 6,592 yards and 75 touchdowns. When he left Texas, Williams broke or tied 21 NCAA Division I-A (now known as FBS) records, including career rushing yards.

Williams never won a national championship while at Texas, but he helped the team win the Big 12 Conference title in 1995 and 1996. The 1995 season was Texas’ best while Williams was there, as the team finished with a 10-2-1 record and a No. 14 ranking in the Coaches and AP polls.
