The NFl season will kick off on Sept. 4. A time to look into the crystal football to prognosticate the regular-season marks of all 32 teams.
Kickoff is upon us. The preseason coming attractions are done and the NFL is ready to roll. The first game of the season will be Sept. 4 when the Super Bowl champion Eagles face the Dallas Cowboys. That's the first of 16 in Week 1 and the start of 272 regular-season contests overall. It is the time to make some bold predictions about what the record for all 32 teams will be and whether they will go over or under their posted win totals.
Arizona Cardinals
The Cardinals are in a position to make a move in the NFC West. The Rams have questions at quarterback despite Matthew Stafford's continued presence at practice. The 49ers are again battling injury woes. Seattle has Sam Darnold at quarterback and Cooper Kupp has new, old faces on offense. Predicted record: 9-8; Win total: Over 8.5
Atlanta Falcons
The drumbeat of how weak the NFC South is has become redundant. The Falcons are in the middle of the muddle. Michael Penix Jr. gets the call at QB for the season. Raheem Morris' defense must be better. Will other teams figure out how to stop Bijan Robinson? Will Kyle Pitts figure out how to stop himself? Predicted record: 7-10; Win total: Under 7.5
Baltimore Ravens
Lamar Jackson got his foot stepped on and it created a world of worry among Ravens fans. John Harbaugh wants everyone to remain calm. If the Ravens can avoid injury to their franchise quarterback that keeps him out of a game, the combo with Derrick Henry should again dominate. The defense always thrives. look for another AFC North crown. Predicted record: 13-4; Win total: Over 11.5
Buffalo Bills
The Bills will roll through the schedule much like the Ravens. No one in the division is actual competition for the AFC East title. Predicted record: 14-3; WIn total: Over 11.5
Carolina Panthers
The Panthers are going to win an NFC South title ... but not this year. They got their act together in 2024 and should continue to make progress this season. It was tough to have faith in Bryce Young but the coaching staff stood by the No. 1 overall pick out of Alabama in his second season and he improved. Chuba Hubbard quietly is a force in the running game. Predicted record; 8-9; Win total: Over 6.5
Chicago Bears
This team should get better under Ben Johnson. It won't be good enough to menace in the NFC North, not by a long shot. Will Caleb Williams make massive strides? Let's try baby steps but remember he did throw 20 TD passes against only six picks as a rookie. Predicted record: 7-10; Win total: Under 8.5
Cincinnati Bengals
What would the Bengals be without some kind of snafu or controversy. They finally got the offense in order with Joe Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase, and Tee Higgins all signed for the long term. So, they mess around with the defense and dawdle with No. 1 pick Shemar Stewart, and continue to hassle with star defensive lineman Trey Hendrickson. Zac Taylor must have chronic migraines. Predicted record: 10-7; Win total: Over 9.5
Cleveland Browns
Joe Flacco is their quarterback. Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders are in the background. That's not an optimistic picture. Sanders was six when Flacco was a rookie with the Ravens. The Super Bowl-winning QB' s longevity would be impressive if he was on a contender. This should be survival. Predicted record: 5-12; Win total: Over 4.5
Dallas Cowboys
The Micah Parsons saga is more of the same in Jerry Jones' soap opera. Either pay him or trade him. It gets boring when the stars simply get a contract after a drawn-out episode. Dallas should improve on last season but not enough to bother the Eagles. Will they compete with the Commanders? Maybe. Prediction: 9-8; Win total: Over7.5
Denver Broncos
Sean Payton accepts and conquers challenges. There were doubters about Bo Nix and look at what he did as a rookie. The next hurdle/obstacle would be to take down the Chiefs in the AFC West. That's a high and mighty task. This might be the year ... and it might not. Prediction: 10-7; Win total: Over 9.5
Detroit Lions
The Lions have become a force in the NFC. They are a powerhouse. However, being a force and a champion are different. Dan Campbell has the train on the right track. Will it continue to gain in the postseason? Will it get Detroit to the Super Bowl? Will the Lions hold off the Packers in the NFC North? Record: 12-5; Win total over 10.5
Green Bay Packers
Matt LaFleur deserves many flowers. He has done a fantastic job in Green Bay. No matter what changes or issues faced, the coach always adjusts. Should be with the Packers for the long haul if management is savvy. The Packers will battle with the Lions for the NFC North crown. Could this come down to a tiebreaker? Sure. Record: 12-5; Win total over 9.5
Houston Texans
Last year it was wide receivers being injured. This year, Joe Mixon is already battling to return. Something in the air in Houston? The Texans should romp in the meager AFC South. The problem is they have yet to show the killer instinct to do what the Bills do in the AFC East. Predicted record: 10-7; Win total: Over 9.5
Indianapolis Colts
Absolutely no reason to believe Daniel Jones will have more success in this shade of blue than he did with Big Blue, aka the New York Giants. Predicted record: 7-10; Win total; Under 7.5
Jacksonville Jaguars
Liam Coen is the latest name on the coaching carousel for Jacksonville. Was Trevor Lawrence a great college quarterback who is just okay in the NFL? This year will tell that tale. Predicted record: 6-11; Win total; Under 7.5
Kansas City Chiefs
Is the dynasty on the way down? Will the Chiefs continue their domination in the AFC West. Feels like this could be the season they come back to the pack or the pack gets close to them. Predicted record: 11-6; Win total: Under 11.5
Las Vegas Raiders
The Pete Carroll era begins. Amazing how the Raiders were not able to find a qualified coach who was less than 74 and might be around for more than a few years. No knock on Carroll but this feels like it could be the job everyone forgets he had when they look back at the end of his resume. Predicted record: 6-11; Win total: Under 7.5
Los Angeles Chargers
The other team in the AFC West that could challenge the Chiefs. Jim Harbaugh seemed unfazed by his massive show cause penalty by the NCAA. Guess he will be more concerned by yellow flags against the Bolts as he should be. Justin Herbert will love having Keenan Allen back to go with Ladd McConkey. Don't think Chargers are going to topple the Chiefs and they may not be better than the Broncos. Predicted record: 10-7; Win total: Over 9.5
Los Angeles Rams
The season hinges on Matthew Stafford's back. Will it hold up for 5 games, 10, 14, 17? The longer it goes the better for Sean McVay. Feel is the Rams are playing a risky game but they did that when they decided to stick with the veteran quarterback. Predicted record: 9-8; Win total: Under 9.5
Miami Dolphins
Not going to be a believer in the Fish. There is no reason to think they suddenly will have the gills to beat good teams. They haven't in the past and aren't about to start. Mike McDaniel could be flirting with job insecurity.Predicted record: 7-10; Win total: Under 8.5
Minnesota Vikings
The Purple will wind up wishing they kept Sam Darnold. Whether susceptible to injury to just the rookie learning curve, J.J. McCarthy is not going to lead this team to a 14-3 regular season. Kevin O'Connell has his work cut out to keep the offense humming. Predicted record: 8-9; Win total: Under 8.5
New England Patriots
Which Coach Mike Vrabel do the Patriots get? The one that built a playoff team in Tennessee or the one that saw the Titans crumble? Vrabel knows the Patriot Way and will start to get the team in the right direction. Predicted record: 9-8; Win total: Over 8.5
New Orleans Saints
As The Rock would say, "It doesn't matter who plays quarterback for the Saints, other teams will beat their candy a---s." Predicted record: 3-14; Win total: Under 6.5
New York Giants
What does it say that the Giants' projected win total on the over/under is lower than the Saints'? Everything. Predicted record: 4-13; Win total: Under 5.5
New York Jets
Aaron Glenn will have more success with the Jets than many of his predecessors. They are not and will not challenge for a wild-card spot. However, they also won't be the joke the team was under the offensive guidance of one Aaron Rodgers. Justin Fields may not be the long-term answer but he will solves some problems. Predicted record: 8-9; Win total: Over 6.5
Philadelphia Eagles
The Eagles may not be dynasty material. Will they repeat as NFC champs in a division no team has been able to for years? They are the best team in the division. Chances are the Commanders will regress as bit as other teams won't be caught by surprise. Look for another NFC East title for Philly and they will go from there. Predicted record: 11-6; Win total: Under 11.5
Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers have a mediocre, over-the-hill quarterback in Aaron Rodgers. Truth hurts. Some people just don't know when it is time to go away. The defense is always beastly and will likely carry the team again. Would be sad if banking on Rodgers costs Mike Tomlin his mark of never finishing below .500. Predicted record: 9-8; Win total: Over 8.5
San Francisco 49ers
The hope or thought, at least, was the Niners would rebound quickly from an injury-plagued season. The wide receivers corps continues to be beset by players lost. Kyle Shanahan has every chance for the team to rebound if he can keep his starters on the field. That must happen. Predicted record: 10-7; Win total: Under 10.5
Seattle Seahawks
The win/loss total on Seattle feels awful light. The Seahawks will make a run at the NFC West title again and should easily post more victories than the number that has been assigned. Predicted record: 10-7; Win total: Over 7.5
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The ministers of mediocrity will continue their rule of the NFC South. Don't expect them to win the division by open lengths. They are a tick or so better than the Panthers, who will improve. The Falcons and Saints shouldn't be a nuisance. Baker Mayfield and the offense will be plenty of fun. The defense will be tested. Predicted record: 10-7; Win total: Over 9.5
Tennessee Titans
Cam Ward will have better years than this one. The Titans need to protect their precious No. 1 pick and make sure he isn't sacked into oblivion. Predicted record: 4-13; Win total: Under 5.5
Washington Commanders
Jayden Daniels will not suffer a sophomore jinx. He will need the Commanders to mend financial fences with Terry McLaurin for Washington to thrive. Better off doing that than losing the gifted wideout. Predicted record: 10-7; Win total over 9.5
