The Royals’ gaffer was speaking after a 2-2 draw at Wycombe Wanderers made it back-to-back points on the road.
The Royals conceded late on to drop points against Wycombe Wanderers with a 2-2 draw at Adams Park.
The home side took the lead early on but the Royals scored two goals through Mamadi Camara and Lewis Wing in quick succession to go in at half-time ahead. The Royals had chances to extend their league but James Tilley equalised to share the points.
It is a point on the board but it should have been three to take ourselves away from the relegation zone. Manager Noel Hunt was frustrated with dropping points but proud of his side’s performance. Here is what he had to say, he spoke to the official club website and Reading Chronicle.
Hunt on taking a step in the right direction
“We have been working hard about being more of a goal threat and being in there and hitting the areas.
“We created plenty, we worked hard, and there were real positives to take”
“The second goal comes from us as we win it back, we won it several times today and I thought it was really good. I asked if we could hurt teams on the transition and improve from Wednesday in terms of getting our first two pass forwards and away to our players, so it doesn’t break down. We stayed with the ball, Ben stays on it, it comes back to Daniel, and it comes back to the right man around the box.
“You could see we tired at the end. But I’m so proud of the boys. We created plenty, we worked hard, and there were real positives to take. We just need to keep building on it.”
Hunt on the Wycombe opener
“It’s not a slip, it’s a foul. Our defender was about to clear the ball, he’s pushed off balance, and they’ve scored from it. Three or four similar incidents happened afterwards and weren’t given – I don’t know what the difference was.”
Hunt on Camara’s goal
“I had a feeling he’d score today. It was a great delivery, a great header, and exactly what we’ve been working on: getting more numbers and threats in the box.
“He worked really hard for the team and tactically he’s very very good and he takes the moment when it comes.”
Hunt on making signings before deadline day
“There are a couple of elements. Teams want money for players and players want big money. We all know now that the salaries in League One have shifted greatly in the last year-and-a-half to two years.
“Between clubs we’re negotiating to get players in, between players we’re negotiating to get them in. Hopefully we have one or two done before Tuesday – whether or not they can play on Tuesday is another thing. We are really hopeful.
“We don’t want to wait anymore and want to get a couple in early next week”
“We have asked questions of some players, but certain ones don’t want to come out of the league they’re in and want to try and stay in the league – fair enough, they’ll wait until the end of the window. We don’t want to wait anymore and want to get a couple in early next week. I’m not sure they’ll be available for Tuesday, but we’ll get a good week of work into them hopefully.
“There is [money to compete]. We’ve had conversations with Rob and Joe. It’s tough because I’ve been a player and people are waiting for money to come out of clubs and if you have two or three years left on a contract on big dough, you don’t want to leave it behind.
“Can we compete with Championship wages? No, we can’t. Not many at this level can, so it’s about a happy medium where they are happy to come. It’s not just that, a lot of these players have families and kids, and we have to keep battling away.”
Hunt on the fans
“The fans were brilliant today. We want to give them moments, memories – and wins. They deserve it just as much as we do.
“I’m gutted for them because we conceded a late goal but it’s a step in the right direction. It’s another point on the board, two unbeaten and we have to keep searching and hopefully the win is around the corner.”
