“Well let’s all go, down to Dumas-Johnson. Let’s all go, down to Dumas-Johnson. We’ll get a butter burger, curds and a bottle of Spotted Cow. Bring it on out to my baby and me.”
It’s not my best effort, but it’ll do as we celebrate some good news for former Kentucky standout Jamon Dumas-Johnson. You see, the Green Bay Packers released the rookie linebacker during final roster cuts down to 53 players this week, but the historic franchise has decided to keep him around on the practice squad.
The undrafted free agent is one of 13 players joining the practice squad, the Packers announced Wednesday. It comes after Dumas-Johnson finished with 11 tackles (six solo) this preseason, including a five-tackle effort against the Seattle Seahawks.
The 23-year-old played one season at Kentucky, racking up 67 tackles (39 solo), seven tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, one interception and one forced fumble en route to Third Team All-SEC honors. Prior to his time in Lexington, he spent three seasons at Georgia as a key piece of the national championship squads in 2021 and 2022, earning First Team All-America accolades in year two as a sophomore.
He finished his collegiate career with 192 tackles, 25 tackles for loss, and 13 sacks in 49 career games.
“To the University of Kentucky and the coaching staff, thank you for the opportunity, welcoming me with open arms, and believing in me,” Dumas-Johnson said upon leaving Lexington.
His final year of eligibility did not go as planned, Kentucky going 4-8 in 2024 after years of championship contention in Athens. He brought a winning edge, though, quick to step up as a leader when the team underperformed.
Safe to say, the Wildcats’ struggles weren’t on the former four-star, top-250 recruit out of high school.
“I ain’t lose in a regular season since I was in like youth ball — well, maybe high school? Sophomore year? But I ain’t lose in a long time. So it definitely didn’t feel good, but you win some, you lose some. I’m just not used to losing them,” Dumas-Johnson said last September. “I guess I don’t really got no words of how I feel about losing because I’m just not used to it. And I don’t plan on getting used to it, either. So I’ve got to correct some things.”
That mindset certainly went a long way with the Packers, keeping winners in that locker room and on the practice field.
