College football’s week one is nearly here, headlined by monster clashes between No. 1 Texas/No. 3 Ohio State, No. 6 Notre Dame/No. 10 Miami and No. 4 Clemson/No. 9 LSU.
One of the most underrated matchups of the opening weekend however is the matchup between TCU and North Carolina on Sept. 1, signifying the first college football game that legendary head coach Bill Belichick has ever coached in.
Belichick is widely regarded as one of (if not the best) NFL head coaches of all time, as he led the New England Patriots to six Super Bowl Championships from 2000-2023. He shocked the entirety of the football world this offseason when he took over the North Carolina program after spending just one year out of the coaching spotlight.
Belichick discusses dealing with national attention
The national media will have eyes all over Chapel Hill this weekend for the monumental event. ESPN is even hosting its ‘College Football Countdown Show‘ live from North Carolina‘s campus one night prior to kick-off. Belichick discussed dealing with national attention ahead of his collegiate debut on Wednesday.
“We’ve just got to control what we can control,” Belichick said. “We can control our preparation, our attitude and our work ethic going into the game and how hard we compete and our communication. However many people are here or not here or however many hours they talk about it on a network show or don’t talk about it, it’s really nothing in our control. It’s irrelevant to us.”
“We’re trying to focus on what we can control helps us win and helps us prepare for the game. And so, the rest of it is all due respect noise for us. We have to focus on our job and let you guys do your job.”
North Carolina lost a total of 41 players to the NCAA transfer portal this offseason, but Belichick answered with 42 portalers committing to his Tar Heels program — the No. 8 class in this year’s team transfer rankings. This includes South Alabama transfer quarterback Gio Lopez, who will start in Carolina’s season opener.
Belichick is also bringing in 30 true freshmen to his roster, good for a top 50 recruiting class.
Kick-off for Monday’s clash between the Tar Heels and Horned Frogs is set for 8:00 PM on ESPN. TCU is a 3.5 point favorite over North Carolina on the road, according to BetMGM.
