Question: On the growth he has seen since being here and areas he has improved

Tommy Togiai: “I would probably say pass rushing. I always played the run pretty good in my career. I think pass rusher is one thing I have always been trying to work on throughout my years in the league. I think getting here, putting it on display this year in [training] camp and the preseason, that was one thing I really wanted to work on. So, yeah, I would say pass rush definitely.”

Q: On how important Defensive Line Rod Wright has been in his career

Togiai: “Vital. When I first got in, it was him and Nate Ollie were over here and bringing me up to speed. I think Rod [Wright] has brought me so far along with my technique and teaching me how to really play attack defense. So, what I have been doing is a testament to him and his coaching.”

Q: On Executive Vice President and General Manager Nick Caserio mentioning he squats 700 pounds and where his squatting strength comes from

Togiai: “Yeah, it is somewhere around that number. I think my strength comes from that I was training early on. My dad was big on raising us kids in the gym. I think that is where it started from.”

Q: On the bond the defensive line room has and it being called the most energetic room

Togiai: “It definitely is, we call the defensive line the engine. The engine of the team, not just the defense but the team. In that room we have a great group of guys. We feed off each other. Someone makes a play, we feed off of that energy. It makes me want to go make a play myself. I think that is a great room to have.”

Q: On his mindset in approaching the offseason

Togiai: “After that final, tough loss in the playoffs, I was just grateful to be in the situation I was in, personally. I wanted to take a step forward and keep it going and increase what I could do. I have been cut previously on other teams so I have always carried that chip on my shoulder and always want to strive to be better.”

Q: On what yesterday was like for him and if there were nerves on cutdown day

Togiai: “Always. I feel like there always is for guys, especially in my position. I definitely was, but then obviously I always fell back to my faith in God. Whatever his plan was for me, I would be good either way. Whether it was with the Texans or somewhere else. I always have my faith in that but I trust in the tape I put during preseason and what I did during camp and that is all I can do.”

Q: On how important it is to have a veteran like DT Sheldon Rankins in the room

Togiai: “Sheldon has been great. I am just trying to soak up all the information that I can from him because he has played in this defense a lot and just being a big vet [veteran] as he is, going against different schemes and all of that. So, he has been a great addition to the defensive line and we are grateful to have him back.”
