James Gladstone explained the decision to put rookie safety Caleb Ransaw on IR.
The Jacksonville Jaguars will be without one of their top young players as rookie Caleb Ransaw was placed on the injured reserve list without a designation to return.
Jaguars general manager James Gladstone said Ransaw had a non-contact injury during training camp that sidelined him as he was relegated to wearing a boot. Then, when he came out of the boot, it became clear he’d require surgery to repair the injury.
“He ended up having the surgery, still had optimism that there was a chance towards the back half of the year that he would be able to return and do a designation for return,” Gladstone told reporters. “Unfortunately, it ended up being that it was going to be too close to the buzzer, so to speak, and it would have been some version of trying to rush him back.”
Ransaw was Gladstone’s second pick in the 2025 draft, a third-round selection from Tulane who the Jaguars converted from nickel to safety. He was projected to potentially have a carved-out role with the team, displaying the versatility to cover slot receivers and play as a free safety.
“I think Caleb's done a really good job. I think he was coached really well in college, also, because he's a sharp guy,” defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile said during mandatory minicamp. “He's got clean feet, moves really, really well, good athlete, and he's doing extra every day too.”
Ransaw was trending upward in camp, starting to see time with Jacksonville’s second unit prior to his injury.
He was complemented by Campanile early in camp for studying throughout the summer to be prepared by the time players returned to the Miller Electric Center for the start of camp.
Now, Ransaw will essentially have a redshirt season before fully delving into playing in the NFL. It’ll give him a chance to get physically prepared for the league while also continuing to familiarize himself with Campanile’s scheme.
“It's disappointing because he's somebody that we certainly had a very vivid vision for, and he was progressing at an extremely high rate,” Gladstone said.
