Well, we got a nice start from Shane Bieber. 6.1 innings, 4 hits, 1 walk and 4 strikeouts. The problem was that two of the hits were home runs. In the fourth inning he gave up back-to-back home runs to Bobby Witt and Vinnie Pasquantino. Other than those two homers, both clearing the wall by a just a little, but they don’t have to clear by a lot.
Bieber looked very good.
And Mason Fluharty (getting the last two outs of the seventh) and Jeff Hoffman, pitching the eighth, put up zeros. Hoffman has to work around an error by Ty France, who had a throw from Clement go off his glove. I thought the runner would have been safe, but it cost us a base.
And, again, the bats didn’t show up. Daulton Varsho hit a home run and that was about all we did.
Four hits in all. Vlad, Springer, Varsho and France (getting a hit in the ninth, giving us hope for a moment). We also had four walks.
I don’t know, there isn’t much we can do other than hope they start hitting.
No one gets Jay of the Day. Fluharty had the high mark at .046 WPA.
Other Award: Kirk (-.163, 0 for 3 with a walk, he had rough day) and Clement (-125, plus an error, 0 for 3, walk).
There was an interesting moment in the eighth, when John decided to pinch-hit Andres Gimenez for Davis Schneider. Two outs in the eighth, I’d have hoped Davis could catch one and tie it with one swing, but Gimenez singled, putting the tying run on base. I don’t think it was the right move, but Schneider was having a bad at-bats today, and has had only one homer this month (.222/.371/.333 line).
Jays, please win tomorrow. Trey Yesavage makes his second start. Michael Wacha (Fozzie Bear’s favourite baseball player) (9-12, 3.79) starts for the Royals. Not that it matters…I could go 5 scoreless against them right now.
