Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt announces Oct. 21 as 'Thunder Day' holiday.
As the offseason dwindles, the Oklahoma City Thunder haven't stopped celebrating their NBA championship. They had one of the greatest years ever with a historic 68-14 regular-season record and brought home the Larry O'Brien trophy.
When you win an NBA championship, expect a summer filled with celebrations. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander won about every award imaginable on his way to his first ring. Now, he's widely viewed as one of the league's best players who could be this generation's Kobe Bryant or Michael Jordan.
Meanwhile, Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren had the Brink's trucks backed up for them. They were signed to handsome contract extensions. Along with Gilgeous-Alexander, the Thunder made quick work of their offseason homework. Now, OKC's title window will remain open for the rest of the decade at the very least.
In exactly one month, the Thunder will flip the page. They will start their NBA championship reign. As they run it back with mostly the same roster, they're regarded as the consensus favorite to be a rare repeat winner. Before that journey begins, though, OKC will celebrate its championship until the clock strikes midnight.
OKC Mayor David Holt announced that Oct. 21 will be called "Thunder Day" as a new one-time holiday. Of course, that's when the Thunder will kick off the 2025-26 regular season, as they host the Houston Rockets on Opening Night. They will drop their championship banner and hand out rings during a pregame ceremony aired on NBC.
"One month from today, on October 21st, our NBA Champions open the 2025-2026 regular season at home. That night, our Thunder’s championship banner will be unveiled in the rafters of our arena, the players will receive their championship rings, and our Larry O’Brien Trophy will take its permanent place in our arena," Holt wrote on social media. "That day - October 21, 2025 - will be THUNDER DAY in OKC. More to come..."
During the Thunder's championship parade, Holt deployed a similar strategy to celebrate sitting in the NBA's throne. From June 30 to July 30, there was a Thunder-designated holiday throughout that entire month. Clay Bennett, Sam Presti, Mark Daigneault and all 18 players received their own day.
Now, the entire Thunder organization will be celebrated on the 2025-26 Opening Night. After being so painfully close to winning an NBA championship, the OKC fanbase has gone all out this summer to celebrate finally bringing one home.
