Greg Schiano Speaks On Rutgers 38-28 Loss to Iowa

Greg Schiano talks Rutgers-Iowa postgame

Right after Friday’s 38-28 loss to Iowa, Rutgers Head Coach Greg Schiano took the podium to answer any questions the media had about the game.

The first question that was asked pertained to the six penalties Rutgers had been called for. As the question mentioned, these penalties came at really debilitating times. For example, in the second quarter, kicker Jai Patel lined up for a field goal, only for it to be called back due to a penalty. His second kick was no good. Another example occurred late in the fourth when a defensive holding penalty on third down nullified a Rutgers defensive stop. In response, Schiano discussed how everything needs to improve, from the players to the coaches, and how they did not deserve to win that game, before adding on the fact that Iowa isn’t a team that is going to beat itself.

Schiano also talked about how Rutgers scored 21 points on their first three drives, but only scored seven the rest of the game. He said that he would have to take a look at why that happened, but he also pointed out that it was not the reason they lost. He did highlight the performances of Athan Kaliakmanis and Ian Strong later on in the press conference as well. Strong had 151 yards receiving while Kalikmanis threw for 330 yards.

When speaking about the defense, Schiano said that he believes they didn’t tackle very well. He also believes that they did not call the necessary scheme to account for Iowa quarterback Mark Gronowski’s ability to run the ball because they were focused on packing the box to stop the more traditional run plays. Iowa took advantage of this as Gronowski racked up 55 yards rushing and scored three touchdowns with his legs.

When the topic turned to injuries, Schiano mentioned that running back CJ Campbell, who left the Norfolk State game early with an injury, is now out for the year.

Rutgers will be back in action on Saturday, September 27th, at Minnesota. The game is slated for a noon kickoff.
