Sponsored by Gustafson's Furniture & Mattress, the Rockford Register Star Athlete of the Week poll for Sept. 15-20 is now live for voting.
Postseason is already closing in for some fall seasons, but there is always time to vote on the Rockford Register Star high school Athlete of the Week poll, sponsored by Gustafson's Furniture & Mattress.
Almost every week for the rest of the school year, we will compile a list of athletes from the Rockford area who had standout weeks, and let you, the reader, vote on who you think deserves the AOTW award. Every week, you will be able to find the nominees as well as the poll at rrstar.com.
And every week, we ask that you vote only once per day, to keep the polls fair. And do not send an email to vote. The only votes that count are the ones on the poll.
Here are this week's nominees:
Kaden Brown, Forreston golf
Brown shot a 76 and placed fourth overall, leading Forreston to the top finish in the team standings of the Salley Wessels Invitational on Saturday in Oregon. The Cardinals shot a 315 to edge runner-up Fulton at 318.
Dermot Dolan, Durand/Pecatonica football
Dolan had another big game, this time against Galena as Du/Pec rolled to a 52-20 win. Dolan rambled for 286 yards and four touchdowns on 25 carries.
Cam Jones, Polo volleyball
Last Wednesday, Jones led Polo in kills (10), assists (16) and aces (four), and was second in digs with six, as her team fell to Fulton in three sets.
Isaac Mugisha, Guilford soccer
Mugisha, one of the area's top defenders this year, marked Stevan Ljubicic from Harlem, the area's top scorer, and held him scoreless and with just one shot on goal during Guilford's 8-1 win last Tuesday. Guilford (9-1-1) is at Hononegah (5-4) on Tuesday.
Aniyah Sarver, Oregon golf
Sarver shot a 43 to win the girls portion of the dual against Genoa-Kingston last Thursday, and she beat all but one of the boys as well. The conference meets kick off the fall postseason for all of the boys and girls golf teams in the Rockford area this weekend.
Angelina Sala, Freeport tennis
Sala beat her Belvidere opponent 6-1, 6-1 last week to climb to 9-2 on the season ― and she's just a freshman. The NIC-10 girls tennis conference tournament is right around the corner, set for Oct. 9-11 at Harlem.
Messiah Tilson, Guilford football
The University of Kentucky recruit had two key interceptions in the game's final 4:39 as Guilford defated Hononegah for the first time since 2007. He also had an early touchdown catch and five receptions for 74 yards, and a bunch of big plays on both sides of the ball..
Draven Zier, Eastland/Pearl City football
Zier rushed for 235 yards on 46 carries with four touchdowns during E/PC's 30-18 win over Fennimore (Wisconsin) this past Friday night.
