Here we go, folks. The final week of the 2025 regular major-league season, and the D-backs have a chance to make the post-season. It has been quite the roller-coaster ride. Before the year began, with the addition of Corbin Burnes and others, we were quite hopeful. But then injuries and poor performance took their toll, dragging the team down as low as eight games below .500 on August 1st. That was just after the team heavily sold at the deadline, and it seemed like everything was over. Yet, there will be meaningful baseball games played at Chase Field this week, in a highly unexpected turnaround. And a lot of scoreboard watching too…

Right now, things are going pretty, pretty well for the D-backs. The Pirates are holding on to a 4-2 lead over the Reds through six innings, though Cincinnati seem to have stranded a small army on the basepaths. Meanwhile, the Mets have been bombed early by the Cubs, and are 5-1 down after the third inning. Hopefully, both of those will be sustained, and if the D-backs can come away with a win against the Dodgers tonight, they would be able to pick up a game on both those teams – that’d put them ahead of the Mets, and one game behind the Reds in the wild-card standings. The Phillies are also up on the Marlins, and that’s a good thing too.

But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves, shall we? For what it’s worth, here’s what I feel should be our rooting interests for the series being played in the first half of the week:

  • Dodgers @ D-backs
  • Mets @ Cubs
  • Pirates @ Reds
  • Marlins @ Phillies
  • Brewers @ Padres

The first three should be obvious, For the last two, we want Philadelphia to have something to play for in their final series against Cincinnati, who are currently the biggest threat to Arizona. They go into play today 2.5 games back of the Brewers for the #1 seed in the NL, so we could use that gap being closed, with Brewers’ losses. However, we probably don’t want the Padres to do TOO well in that series, especially if we beat the Dodgers. Ideally, we’d like San Diego not to have any hope of overtaking Los Angeles or Chicago when the D-backs arrive there on Friday. So this is all subject to change as the next three days unfold!
