The coach has played down the error
Barcelona boss Hansi Flick backed goalkeeper Joan Garcia after seeing the summer signing make a real blunder in Thursday’s win over Real Oviedo.
The stopper gifted the hosts the opening goal with a poor pass but saw his team-mates spare his blushes by scoring three times to secure the win.
Here’s what Flick made of it all:
“That’s how we want Joan to play. Something like that can happen. He’s a fantastic goalkeeper, and he showed it at the end of the game,” he told the media.
“It was a mistake, but this is football, and it’s always important that he’s in that first line of defense.”
Flick also spoke about his changes during the match which helped win the game. Robert Lewandowski replaced Raphinha and put Barca 2-1 up, while Frenkie de Jong took over from Marc Casado at half-time and made an impact.
“Raphinha is fine, the substitution was a technical decision,” he explained.
“In the first half, we played well, creating enough chances to score but not doing so. In the second half, we continued that line. We have to keep going. The substitutions came at the right time. I’m happy we got the three points. Frenkie and Lewandowski contributed to that.”
“It’s always important to score goals. It’s not easy against a team that has defended very well. Set pieces are very important in these types of matches.
“I’ll be in front of the television to watch the derby.”
The weekend looks set to bring more drama in La Liga, with Real Madrid at Atletico on Saturday and Barca facing Real Sociedad on Sunday.
