Coach Prime referred to Ralphia VII as a “high-level recruit.”
Deion Sanders praises Ralphie VII after joking about mascot transfer portal originally appeared on The Sporting News
On the Colorado Football Coaches Show with co-host Mark Johnson, Coach Prime blended humor with admiration as he discussed Ralphie VII, Colorado’s live buffalo mascot.
“I feel bad for the [last] Ralphie that got in the portal,” Sanders said. “Let’s just get that straight. I want to get that out, right? I feel bad that Ralphie got in the portal. And usually when guys…well, people get in the portal, I’m cool, right? I felt bad. But I see what we got…In return, the new Ralphie ain’t no joke.”
Sanders described watching Ralphie’s practice runs from above. “See, I’ve been from my balcony watching the practices and they’ve been on point. I was afraid for the Ralphie handlers because new Ralphie got out that thing like a young hungry [bison]…a freshman Ralphie.”

That’s when Mark Johnson added, “I think Prime would say Ralphie’s a dog.”
Sanders jumped right in. “Ralphie’s a dog. Ralphie has the D on her chest.” He laughed at his own wording before clarifying. “On her chest, yeah…but Ralphie’s a dog.”
The handlers also earned Prime’s respect. “You know it’s a good run when the handlers are dragging behind hanging out on the lead ropes. I’m happy, I’m excited, I’m elated without question. The handlers are doing a great job.”

Looking ahead to BYU’s visit, Sanders tied Ralphie’s spirit to the program’s identity. “That’s a high-level recruit right there,” he said. “Ralphie’s a dog.”
