Tua Tagovailoa snaps back at former NFL MVP Cam Newton

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa defends himself against Cam Newton criticism.

Speaking with the South Florida media following practice on Thursday, Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa admitted he isn’t playing his best football to start the 2025 campaign. Tagovailoa is absolutely correct — as the passer has already accounted for five turnovers in just three games. The Dolphins are 0-3 and their lackluster quarterback play is a main reason why.

Last week, 2015 NFL MVP and Super Bowl starting quarterback, Cam Newton, addressed Tagovailoa’s struggles in relation to the quarterback’s big money contract he signed following the 2023 NFL season.

In this case, it should be more money, more expectations. … What you’re being paid, what you’re asked to do, what you have the capability of — from one quarterback to the other, I look at the situation like, come on, dawg. Especially when you’ve got a Ferrari and a Lamborghini and other amenities that other quarterbacks wish they had.

Tagovailoa was asked about Newton’s comments and clapped back at the former Carolina Panthers passer.

Well, anybody can play quarterback in this league then. I want to see anybody on the streets come and play quarterback,” Tagovailoa said. “Cam is doing his thing for sure, but I think it’s easier to be able to hold a clicker and talk about it that way or talk about what someone else is doing wrong when you’re not going out and having to do the same as them.”

Miami’s signal caller continued: “I think it’s easy to do that, I think anybody can do that. I don’t think anybody can play quarterback.”

While Tagovailoa was, for the most part, talking about analysts and fans who have never suited up in the league, it was strange to hear him question Newton’s ability to handle playing quarterback in the NFL, as the former #1 overall pick in the 2011 National Football League Draft had a highly successful 11-year professional career.

For Tagovailoa and the rest of the Miami Dolphins, the harsh criticisms will most certainly continue until the players and coaches silence the noise by winning football games. Until then, talk is just that — talk. It’s time to let the Dolphins’ play on the field do the talking for them.
